How does your roof look? Now that October is here and fall should be in full swing, you might need to repair your roof. However, sometimes even roof repairs aren’t enough to save it. How can you tell if your roof has outworn its life expectancy? After all, it might not have just been a storm that happened over the summer – knocking over a tree – or high autumn winds ripping shingles off, that damaged it beyond repair. Here are six signs it’s time for a new roof this fall.
The Age of the Roof
If your roof is made of asphalt and features asphalt shingles, then you can look forward to your roof lasting quite a long time. Just how long, in particular? Anywhere between 20-25 years! However, if your current roof was merely laid on top of its predecessor, and it is starting to hit the upper edge of its life expectancy, you would be much better off getting a new roof installed.
Weathered Shingles
When the shingles on your old roof begin to wear out, you might see them curling. The outer edge of the shingle might bend, or the curly effect could appear in the middle of the shingle. Either way, these are both telltale symptoms of the shingles in question suffering damage from weathering. If your roof shingles are weathering, they could indicate a leak in your roof as well.
Displaced Shingles
Even if your shingles are in excellent condition, they might be on the ground, or someplace else they don’t belong. Small patches of missing shingles are easy to remedy with some new shingles. But when shingles start to fall off of your roof like leaves from a tree, it is high time to get a new roof. Taking this piece of advice is even more critical when you go to replace your current shingles and find that you can’t supply matching colors, styles, and textures.
Shingle Grains in Your Gutters
Don’t forget to monitor the condition of your gutters as well! Aging roofs will start to shed shingle grains. These grains might end up inside your gutters and can clog the gutters if not promptly removed. If you see darker patches on your roof that shouldn’t be there, it is more evidence the shingle grains are starting to disintegrate.
Holes in the Roof
When you’re inspecting your roof, it helps to climb up onto it to test its integrity. If it feels unsteady or bouncy, call a professional for a roof inspection. Then, you should venture into your attic and look up to see if you can spot any holes.
The Roof Sags
Does your roof sag? If it does, then that is a sign of significant structural distress. When your roof is drooping, you need to get it replaced as soon as possible.
