Tips for Installing New Gutters This Spring

Eventually, you will need to replace your home’s gutters.

Eventually, you will need to replace your home’s gutters. If you are looking to accomplish that task this coming weekend, then be sure that you do it as carefully as possible. As always, don’t hesitate to contact the experts at Topper Construction when you need help. Here are some useful tips for installing some new gutters this spring.

Find the Right Size

First of all, you need to determine the correct size for your new gutters. When the gutters are the proper size, they will better protect your home against the late spring weather we are used to seeing in our region of the east coast. By expecting plenty of rain, you can prevent the possibility of flooding or other types of water damage to your home and your home’s foundation. To figure this all out, you will need to inspect your roof and determine how large your roof is along with how steeply it slopes. You can find calculators online, but you can also trust the professionals at Topper Construction to help you get it right on your first try.

Align the Downspouts

Don’t forget about the downspouts, either. Gutters and downspouts are two critical elements of the same system designed to protect your home’s exterior and interior. That said, your downspouts should be placed at the corners of your home, and at most, each downspout should cover about twenty feet of gutter. The downspouts should be at the end of each of your gutters.

Lay It Out

Along with the gutters and downspouts, you need to examine the condition of the soffits and fascias on your home. Your gutters connect to the fascia, but before you can start hanging your gutters up, you need to figure out where you can attach your downspouts. The solution to this dilemma is to lay out your gutters on your lawn near the side of your house. By doing this, you can see where you need to cut the gutters into separate pieces as well as punching holes for the downspouts and seeing where to attach what is known as the downspout connector.

Complete the Seal

To make sure that all the gutter pieces and downspout connectors stay together, you need to seal them. However, you’ve got to give this sealant some time to dry before before you can start putting them up. Pour some water over the seal to see how well it has dried, but be careful not to overdo it.
