3 Reasons Why Your Roof Shingles Suffer Granule Decay

Maintaining your roof shingles is one of the best investments you could ever make. Even if you have never heard of the term granules before, you’ve got to understand what granule loss means.

Your home’s roof is essential for keeping it safe, warm, and dry. Just imagine all of the possible water damage that could wreck your home if it didn’t have a roof. Maintaining your roof shingles is one of the best investments you could ever make. Even if you have never heard of the term granules before, you’ve got to understand what granule loss means.

Contractor Movement

Many homeowners believe they have the skills needed to climb up on a roof and diagnose any problems they see. After that, they will proceed to fix these problems. However, this is unsafe, and the tasks of roof repairs or shingle replacement should be left to professional roofing contractors who have all of the tools, training, and safety equipment they need to get the job done the right way. Either way, as the contractors walk around on your roof, the granules on the shingles could become dislodged. Some balding is bound to happen, but if the roof is still in reasonably good condition, then you have nothing to worry about right now.

Mother Nature

Bad weather can damage your roof. If you walk outside and see that some shingles have fallen on the ground, then they could have been blown away by wind and rain. In other words, Mother Nature can cause your roof shingles to wear down sooner than expected. Hail falling on your roof can damage your roof even more. Plus, heavy rains can degrade your roof by pushing the granules off. By the time you notice anything is wrong, it could already be too late.

The Passage of Time

Time is an unstoppable force, so it should come as little surprise that over time, your roof will gradually weaken. The support beams will start to buckle, the joints will crack, and leaks will spring up in the nooks and crannies of your roof shingles. Other features on your roof, such as soffits, fascia, roof flashing, and skylights, will also suffer damage. Your roof shingles can also be damaged by sunlight exposure, debris falling from nearby trees, and wild animals scurrying across it. Shingles can lose integrity due to granule loss. Part of preventing this problem involves scheduling routine maintenance to ensure that nothing is wrong with your roof, and if there is, then early detection can still make a difference!
