How to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter

How to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter

Even if winter doesn’t officially set in until late December, you still need to prepare. Here’s how you can get your roof ready for winter.

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, winter is almost here. Even if winter doesn’t officially set in until late December, you still need to prepare. You never know when the next snowstorm will strike. Here’s how you can get your roof ready for winter.

Clean Up the Gutters

One of the most important maintenance tasks you can do around your home is to clean out your gutters. Keeping your gutters clean will also help get your roof ready for winter weather. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can block the gutters. A clogged gutter can lead to severe water damage that threatens your ceiling, your basement, and other interior areas of your home. You also need to pay attention to the foundations of your home, because water damage from clogged gutters can reach down there too. If cleaning up the gutters doesn’t reduce the amount of water damage, then it’s time to replace your gutters entirely.

Look for Signs of Damage

The next thing you will need to do is to inspect your roof. Look for any obvious signs of damage. One sign of damage is missing caulk, and another is loose shingles. You’ll also need to be sure the underlayment is sturdy. However, sometimes it can be unsafe to climb up onto the roof. That’s why you should hire professional roofers to inspect it if you are unsure if it is safe enough for you to go up there. If binoculars don’t allow you to see any signs of damage, then you might have to use a drone aircraft to go up there for you.

Repair the Attic

The last part of preparing your roof for winter is to inspect the attic. Reinforcing your roof beams before a hurricane arrives is a good idea, and the same principle applies if you’re worried about your home being affected by a blizzard. See if there are any spots of strange color on the ceiling of the attic. Make sure none of the insulation has rotted away – if it has you need to replace it as soon as possible. Before you leave the attic, make sure there’s enough ventilation. A properly ventilated attic is less likely to suffer the effects of moisture damage from seasonal rains or mold infestations caused by pesky leaks.
