If you’re looking for a unique design that makes a bold aesthetic statement than a flat roof can be a great benefit but take note, it comes with additional maintenance. Regardless of what type of roof you choose, you will have support, but the types differ significantly. For flat roofs, the threat of water damage and snow buildup is higher. These issues can be remedied easily, but you must be more aware of the potential problems. In general, a flat roof is just as well protected from rain and leaks, but it is unable to dispel any water that might form pools on the surface. There are three main tools for flat roof drainage, today we’ll walk you through them.

Gutters

Perhaps the most common form of water removal, gutters help water drain off of your roof and away from your home. They are perfect for an easy, cost-effective solution that works for most homes and buildings. However, they do not help to remove water that has pooled in the middle of a roof. Gutters also need routine cleaning and can break when weighed down by leaves and debris.

Interior Drains

Using an interior drainage system on a flat roof is another great option, it tends to work well if you are worried about pooling making it particularly good for larger roofs. Interior drains include a network of covered drains, pipes, and gutters that allow water to move off of the roof. This system is highly effective, but it does require that the drains and pipes be checked regularly for any blockages and debris.

Scuppers

A scupper system involves installing small outlets at the edges of a roof so that water is projected away from the building. This method is useful because it is low cost and requires little maintenance as it is unlikely to clog. That said, it works best when the roof is slightly sloped or tapered.
