Your roof is like a helmet for your home, protecting you from everything outside. When it comes to making sure that your roof is perfectly sealed and your home is safe from the elements, roof flashing is the glue that holds the whole operation together. It’s particularly important that your flashing is in good shape as we endure the tumultuous weather of early spring. Stick around for this week’s blog post, all about the importance of roof flashing.
What is Roof Flashing, Anyway?
Excellent first question — we’re glad you asked. Flashing is a protective seal that prevents water and air leaks at roof breaks for features like chimneys, vents, or skylights. Anywhere you disrupt the surface of your roof, flashing is installed to make sure that the addition is as weather-tight as the roof was before the construction began. It’s also used in irregularly shaped roofs, for peaks and valleys, joints, grooves and gaps, and intersections and projections. Basically, it’s a reinforcement to ensure you won’t be dealing with any roof leaks for any reason.
Dangers of Improper or Absent Roof Flashing
Aside from the dangers of roof leaks and the associated water damage, (which you can read all about in our blog post specifically about roof leaks, linked above), there’s also the likelihood of draftiness, which could reduce the efficiency of your home’s heating and cooling, consequently boosting your energy bill. As far as the health of your roof goes, poor roof flashing can lead to early degradation of roof joints and structural integrity, so its installation is imperative when building a new roof, adding a roof feature, or renovating an old roof.
Have your flashing installed right the first time to prevent headaches from faulty roofing later down the road. There are plenty of spring showers headed our way — don’t let that rainwater flow past flashing.
