During the late winter, you’re most worried about ice and snow wreaking havoc on your roof. So that’s why you might not notice other sources of roof damage until it’s too late. While it’s easy to spot mold and leaks on your roof, it’s possible that you will miss these signs.
The Presence of Wild Animals
Most of the birds have flown south for the winter, so you would think that they wouldn’t cause problems on your roof, right? Well, that’s not entirely true. Birds will still visit your home, especially if you have a bird feeder. While this happens much more frequently in the warmer months of spring and summer, birds can turn your gutters, roof, and attic into a nesting place, leaving plenty of roof damage behind. You might also see some damage caused to your roof by the presence of other wild animals such as squirrels or raccoons. There is most likely a hole or a gap in your roofing that has allowed those critters to get inside far enough to seek shelter from the elements.
Strange Noises or Airflow
Another problem that might not be immediately evident as a sign of roof damage is when you continually hear strange noises. If there is a noticeable amount of airflow, or if you hear odd whistling sounds, then there is also an opening that is allowing the wind to pass through; in some cases, this gap could be letting warm air escape your home or letting cold air into your home instead.
Warping Shingles
The shingles on your roof won’t last forever. Unfortunately, the weather is another common source of roof damage that you don’t think of on a regular basis, especially on days when the forecast is relatively mild. Even though you can find the shingles that have been blown away from your roof by the wind, chances are you can’t tell when the shingles are warping or buckling unless you do a close-up inspection.
Loose Nails
Nails are exceedingly important for all parts of your home’s exterior. For instance, they help anchor the gutters, fascia, soffits, and roof flashing that all do their part in protecting your home from various types of damage. Nails also help hold siding in place. Loose nails, on the other hand, are an enormous problem. These nails will fall off of your roof and end up in your gutters, and occasionally, will fall onto your lawn or embed themselves into your siding.
