Tips for Maintaining Your Metal Roof

Metal Roof

Metal roofs are a great option that looks great and lasts a long time, if you know how to maintain it!

If you have a metal roof the first thing we need to do is congratulate you recognizing the benefits of this type of roofing system. But now that you have a metal roof, you’re probably wondering how to keep it strong and looking its best. We have a few tips you should read through that will help you keep that roof in top shape. Remember, any big problems should be handled by a professional to ensure there’s no further damage to your roof.

Getting Rid of Scratches

If there are scratches on your metal roof you can use metal touch-up paint to cover them. First, clean the area with water and just a few drops of dish soap. Once the metal is clean rinse away the leftover soap and grime with a garden hose. Next, use mineral spirits to remove any oils or anything the first wash missed. Again, rinse with clean water and allow to totally dry. Finally, use a small paintbrush and touch-up paint to paint over the scratches.

Keep Your Eye on the Storm

Metal is a notoriously strong building material but that doesn’t mean it can’t be damaged, especially after a strong storm comes through. Falling branches are the number one enemy of any roof, so if you know there’s a big storm on the way you should check your trees for any dead or dying limbs.

Don’t Mix Metals

If you happen to have other metals on your house you should take extra care in making sure they don’t touch. If they are touching and get wet during rainfall or while you’re cleaning your roof the two metals can start to break down thanks to a process called electrolytic corrosion.
