Why Have a Skylight Installed?

Residential Home with Skylights

Skylights are a great way to bring natural light into your home.

Summer officially started this week, and with it comes hot and sunny weather. Soon you’ll find yourself running inside to get out of the heat and into that nice cool air conditioning. But summer can’t last forever, and once the leaves turn and the weather starts to cool off you’ll be missing that sun more and more. Maybe you should consider planning ahead and having a skylight installed so you can catch those sweet rays of sunshine all year round, especially if you’re starting to think it may be time for a new roof.

Types of Skylights

There are three types of skylights: ventilating, fixed, and tubular. A ventilating skylight can be opened or closed manually or by a motor. This type of skylight is great for any room that needs steady airflow. Fixed skylights are the most common kind of skylight. They do not open, but allow natural light into a room while offering a view of the sky. Tubular skylights are made of a translucent tube lined with highly reflective material to bring sunlight into rooms or hallways where a traditional skylight wouldn’t fit.

Pros

The biggest advantage to having a skylight installed is the most obvious one, all that natural sunlight! Having your home lit up with sunlight can has positive effects on your mood, especially in the winter when sunlight is hard to come by. Plus, you can save on heating costs during the colder months. Tubular skylights can even bring the advantages of natural light into the smallest and darkest parts of your home.

Cons

If not installed properly skylights can leak, and they are more prone to the elements and tree damage since glass is not as strong as other roofing materials. Many people worry about solar heat gains costing them more to keep cool in the summer, but skylight manufacturers use the same techniques and technology to make their products more energy efficient.
