Will You Need a New Roof After Winter?

new roof

Winter can be tough on your roof. Here’s how to tell if it was so tough you need a new roof.

A roof is the first line of defense in protecting your home from the elements. And no season is harder on your roof than the winter. Winter precipitation can create many problems that may result in the need for a new roof after the season. Here are some of the signs you should look for this winter that may lead to you seeking a new roof replacement during the subsequent spring.

Condensation

Condensation happens when warm air meets a cold surface. An improperly insulated attic is the perfect place for condensation to form and this can lead to mold and mildew. This can be destructive to the interior structure of your home if your roof is inadequately ventilated. So if you see condensation forming in your attic, it may indicate that you need a new roof.

Leaks in your Flashings

Those with sloped roofs may be familiar with flashings. They are the strips of metal placed on the front edge, corners, and ridges of your roof. They can start to pull away from the roof during violent storms or if they are not installed properly, leading to water leaks.

Tree Limb Damage

Trees are beautiful, but they can be damaging if they hang over a roof… especially during the winter time. Snow and ice can weigh down tree limbs and, if they are damaged or diseased, they can fall off right on your roof. Even if they don’t break off, they can damage the top layer of your roof if they scrape it. If they cause enough damage, you might be looking for a new roof next spring.

Ice Dams

Ice dams occur when the upper areas of an icy roof begin to thaw, but the lower perimeter areas remain frozen. The melting snow and ice on the top parts of the roof refreeze on the lower sections and gutters to create an ice dam. When water pools behind the dam, it could leak into your home through cracks and joints in the roofing material.

Icicles

Icicles are often the result of clogged gutters and downspouts. Their weight can cause a lot of problems for your roofing and gutters, so keeping the gutters clear of any leaves and debris is essential to preventing this kind of damage.
