Two Upgrades to Cut Heating Costs this Winter

insulated vinyl

Insulated vinyl siding will do a better job of keeping the cold out than regular vinyl siding.

That first energy bill after a nice comfortable fall can come as a shock. Keeping a house warm all winter is vital, but it isn’t cheap. A house with a less than efficient roof and siding won’t be doing you any favors, either. Here are two upgrades that will greatly improve your house’s energy efficiency, and will help cut heating costs this winter.

Insulated Vinyl Siding

Insulated vinyl siding works because it helps fight thermal bridging, or when heat escapes from the weakest point in your insulation. The siding has an insulated backing that improves its R-value, or the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. Less heat escaping through the walls means your heater won’t be fighting to replace the warm air getting out. Insulated vinyl siding keeps noise out, too, since it’s thicker than regular vinyl siding. The extra heft helps insulated siding withstand impacts better as well.

Solar Shingles

Solar shingles work like solar panels, but are smaller and incorporate into your roof to form a seamless energy saving unit. If you’re having a new roof installed, solar shingles can be installed with the roof in the optimal location and angle to bring down heating costs. Plus, solar shingles take less time to install than solar panels and don’t require additional supports or brackets.
