How to Keep Your Vinyl Siding Look Its Best This Spring

All of the rain and wind we’ve been seeing will take its toll on your vinyl siding. Here is how to keep your siding looking its best.

You might not believe it, but we’re almost a full month into spring. Even so, we’ve rarely seen a hot, sunny, spring day, where it’s warm enough to stroll around outside without heavy coats, scarves, and gloves. But all of the rain and wind we’ve been seeing will take its toll on your vinyl siding. Here is how to keep your siding looking its best.

Keep It Clean

Above all else, you’ve got to keep your vinyl siding clean. Even though it’s a low-maintenance material, not needing much upkeep doesn’t prevent the siding from collecting mud, dust, and pollen. The longer you wait to get the cleaning done, the more difficult it will be. So get out in front of the muck by cleaning your vinyl siding. Once a year is fine, but ideally, you would do it more than once in a given year. Using a cloth or a brush with softer bristles will suffice. You can work your way up from the bottom of your home, just be careful.

Be Careful

When it’s time to clean your vinyl siding, you might be tempted to use a pressure washer to finish this task more quickly. Sometimes, the force of the pressure washer can damage or destroy siding. For other kinds of siding, you might have to select a lower power setting, or you can only use particular cleaning solutions. In either case, don’t forget to look out for hazards.

Look Out for Hazards

The hazards you need to keep an eye out for might not seem like obvious risks. However, that might make them even more dangerous, instead of less. For instance, your lawnmower blades can ruin your siding if you’re not careful, along with any projectiles that are ejected from it if you’re not careful. Don’t overlook the necessity of tree care, especially as trees, shrubs, and bushes start thriving again – they could scratch or gouge your siding deep enough to allow water infiltration where you can’t see it.

Check for Damages

If you’re thinking about firing up the grill as the weather warms up, then stay clear of the side of your house. Your vinyl siding isn’t likely to appreciate any smoke or heat damage. Common gardening chemicals can also leave behind stains or unsightly blotches of discoloration that can ruin the aesthetic value of your home’s exterior.
