One of the many tasks you will try to accomplish this fall involves painting your vinyl siding. However, you might not always be sure how to do it. Luckily, we have some tips for you to follow. Here’s what you can do.
What You Should Know
Before you can get started, you need to make sure that your vinyl siding is still in good condition. Wet fall weather such as rainstorms and windstorms can do huge amounts of damage to your siding. When you keep it well-maintained, vinyl siding can last for decades. That said, if it is more than fifteen years old you’re better off exploring your options when it comes to siding replacements.
Clean the Siding
Once you have determined that your siding is good to go, you need to clean it. There are commercially available cleaning solutions specifically formulated for all types of siding. Although you can use a power washer to clean your siding, you’ll want to be careful. You could decide instead to use a mixture of vinegar and water to get your siding clean.
Choose the Paint Color
Now that your siding is clean, it’s time to choose the type and color of paint that you want. Choose a color that will either complement the rest of your home’s exterior or one that will stand out. Either way, make sure you can’t see the previous layer of paint underneath it. Heat can warp your siding, so be mindful of that if you want a darker color than you did before. Also, unlike other painting projects, for this, you won’t need to use any primer.
Start the Painting Process
You can finally start the painting process. Choose a small area of your siding and test the paint to be sure you like how it looks before you get too far into the project. You’ll also need to make sure that the paint is sticking to the vinyl siding as it should. Cover window sills and other exterior features with painter’s tape to protect them. Once you’ve done that, start at the top and work your way down. If you want to do multiple coats of paint, you will have to wait. Allow the first new layer to dry before adding any more coats. Waiting about a day or so should be long enough.
