Safety First: Construction Safety and Preventing Falls

Stand Down with Topper and OSHA and learn more about construction safety on this week’s blog.

This week marks the third annual National Safety Stand-Down week. For the past three years, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has used this week to bring attention to construction site falls, one of the continuously leading causes of on-site fatalities. In 2014, 337 of 874 construction deaths were direct results of falls from elevation. 337 deaths that were preventable, had proper construction safety practices been observed. As your favorite roofing contractor, we spend a good amount of time in places where falling would be…less than ideal. We thought it pertinent, then, to take this blog post to talk about OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down and how we, and others, can adjust their construction safety practices accordingly.

OSHA’s Stand-Down Goals for 2016

First and foremost, the goal of any OSHA initiative is to promote workplace health and reduce the number of preventable deaths in the workplace. Last year, their Stand-Down initiatives reached and educated over 2.5 million workers. This year, they hope to double that. By reaching their goal of 5 million construction workers, they will have educated over half of the country’s construction workforce.

Construction Safety Events and Resources

For more information straight from the horse’s mouth, visit OSHA’s Stand-Down homepage. We also want to direct you to their list of resources (including training materials, brochures, posters, etc.), as well as events across the country to educate about construction safety and eliminating fall risks on-site. Lastly, share your story with OSHA here to receive an official certificate of participation, and share on social media with the hashtag #StandDown4Safety.

Stand Down with Topper Construction

As for us, we take construction safety very seriously. We recognize the danger of spending so much of our time on roofs of buildings, and we do a great deal in the name of safety. This ranges from staffing a third-party construction safety consultant, hosting weekly safety meetings, and conducting unannounced on-site safety inspections. As a result of our safety efforts, Topper has one of the lowest possible Workman’s Comp rates that can be achieved by a roofing/siding contractor. We’ve received five consecutive annual safety awards from IWIF/Chesapeake in honor of our commitment to workplace safety, and four consecutive Lighthouse Beam Safety Awards from BB&T Insurance Services. Suffice it to say, we’ll be standing down with OSHA this week. We hope you’ll join us.
