Cracked Siding? Here are Your Options

Cracked siding is a distracting blemish on an otherwise hardy home. One of the things to consider when replacing your siding is if your current siding choice is the best option. There are different siding options, and each of them have their benefits and disadvantages.

Is it time to replace your cracked siding? Here are your options.

If you’re considering replacing your siding, or choosing siding as the option for your new home, make sure you know which option is best for you. The following information will help you decide between the many siding options available to you.

Vinyl Siding

The U.S. Census Bureau shows that in 2014, the most popular option for the primary siding of new homes was vinyl siding, with 30% percent of new homes built with vinyl siding. Vinyl is such a popular option for siding because it is durable, versatile, requires little maintenance, and is also energy efficient.

Vinyl Siding is a great option for homes in areas that may be affected by high winds, intense heat, or other extreme weather elements. Because of its durability, it holds up extremely well under the pressure of bad weather, wind, and heat. It’s also easy to clean, requiring only soap and water to keep it looking new.

Fiber Cement Siding

With the durability of brick, and the charming appearance of wood, fiber cement siding could be the solution to your cracked siding issue. Although it is more expensive than vinyl, it also has a good reputation for longevity. Not to mention, it is even more low maintenance than vinyl siding—but remember, any siding should still be cleaned at least once a year.

One thing to consider about fiber cement siding is it may be installed two ways: pre-colored or primed. Although pre-colored cement siding has many color options, primed (unpainted) can be customized to your desire in regards to paint color. This makes it an attractive option for those who have custom paint in mind for their home.

Wood Siding

Although wood siding is wrongly seen as inferior to its vinyl and fiber cement counterparts, it is still a wonderful option for many homes. Today’s technology allows for wood to be treated against the elements, nature, bugs/insects, and other issues that are now in the past. It’s also one of the most aesthetically pleasing options for siding.

There are a couple of different options for wood: cedar shingles/shakes, board-and-batten, tongue-and-groove, drop-channel, bevel, and split log siding. Each option has its own benefit, but the main thing most people consider when choosing between the different wood siding options is appearance. Do you prefer the reddish tint of cedar, or the cabin-like appeal of oak? Wood offers an attractive siding with many options.
