Help! There Are Icicles on My Roof!

Unlike the other parts of the year, winter presents some unique challenges when it comes to roofing. If your roof is old and too worn out, then it could have been damaged by icicles. What should you do when you find these spikes of ice growing out of control on your home this winter? You’re in the right place to find out more.

Ice Dams

One of the reasons your home is overrun with icicles is because of ice dams. These pesky puddles of ice form because of problems with your gutters and your attic. The gutters could be clogged with water that can’t drain, or your attic isn’t properly insulated. If you don’t do anything about the ice dams on your roof, you could end up paying for expensive and time-consuming repairs and replacements. During this process, you may not be able to continue living in your home. You’ll likely need to seek shelter elsewhere. After all, you’ve got to be mindful of what water damage can do to your attic, your roof, your ceilings, and all of your home’s exterior.

Solutions

Fortunately, you do have some options. For one thing, you need to make sure that your attic is insulated. The attic can trap the heat rising through your home and collect the warmth shining down with the weak winter sunlight. This means that the ice and snow on your roof can melt. Unfortunately, all of this moisture from the melting can refreeze and then thaw again, causing even more headaches in the process.

More Solutions

Take a look at every possible source of heat inside your home. This isn’t only restricted to space heaters and furnaces. Dryers, bathrooms, and even chimneys can exhale heat from inside your home. You would think this would prevent the formation of icicles and ice dams on your roof, but that isn’t always the case. Check to make sure they are all in good condition. Also, don’t forget to have your roof inspected. If you have missing tiles due to ice damage, that can make any existing problems far worse. You might need more extensive repairs and replacement, even after getting a new roof installed. However, you won’t know for sure until you consult the advice of the experts here at Topper Construction.
