The Value of Architectural Shingles

Architectural Shingles

We think architectural shingles are well worth the upgrade if there’s room in your budget.

Installing a new roof is bound to be a daunting project, with loads of decisions to make and mistakes to avoid. When you’ve decided to take on a new roof and you’re looking at various roofing services and the options they offer, you’ll see a few different tiers of roof material quality. You’ll also notice that the top of the list will feature something called architectural shingles, rather than three tab shingles, and that they cost a little more. But are they worth the boosted budget? The short answer? Yes. The longer answer? Keep reading.

What are Architectural Shingles Anyway?

Both varieties — three tab and architectural shingles — are different iterations of asphalt shingles. Architectural shingles, however, are made with a thicker and higher quality type of asphalt, which makes these a higher quality product. Sometimes referred to as laminated, composite, or dimensional, different manufacturers can provide slightly different products, so we recommend contacting your roofing services provider to know exactly what you’re getting.

Benefits of Architectural Shingles

  • Visual Appeal: Since architectural shingles are made of a thicker mold of asphalt, they’re given a three-dimensional look (hence the “dimensional” name mentioned above). Meant to replicate the look of slate without the necessity and cost of added weight support, your home will look great a lesser cost than slate.
  • Durability: While lighter than slate, architectural shingles weigh in a little heavier than three-tab, finding a happy medium between the two. This makes them able to stand up to heavier winds and give you peace of mind when a harsh storm hits.
  • Warranty: Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of architectural shingles is the reassurance you’ll feel from the warranty. All architectural shingles come with a warranty of 35-40 years (or even a lifetime warranty), which will outlast the warranty on most three tab shingles by 10-15 years. With proper maintenance on top of this warranty, you’ll be extending the life of your roof by a considerable margin.

A new-looking roof will keep your home looking and feeling good for a long time. Architectural shingles can accomplish that new look for years to come while other roofs on your street start to fade. If you’re still not convinced, contact your favorite roofing services provider for more information.
